Fushigi Yugi follows Miaka Yuuki and her friend Yui Hongo in their adventures in the Universe of the Four Gods. They were in the Library attempting to study when Miaka saw a red Phoenix. Curiosity made her follow it to a special section of the library. In the room she found a book called the Universe of The Four Gods. She read the words "One who finishes the book shall acquire the power to make her wishes come true". She was then whisked into the book itself.

When the library was closing and Yui couldn't find Miaka, she went looking for her and found the book. As she read about Miaka's adventures and how she went through rough spots, things would happen to her as they would to Miaka. If Miaka got a cut, Yui got one in the same spot. They were connected through the book.

Eventually, Miaka was allowed to return to the Real World, but Yui took her place. As a result, she chose to return to the world of the book once more to find and rescue Yui. Once she got there, things had changed dramatically, eventually causing Yui and Miaka to become bitter enemies. Miaka became the Priestess of Suzaku and went on a mission to gather her seven celestial warriors to gain the power to make her wishes come true. Yui eventually became the Priestess of Seiryu tryng to overcome the same feat as well. They encounter a world of love, betrayal, peril and friendship as they strive to accomplish their goals. A truly remarkably romantic comedy.
