Journey of the Heart

Chapter 1

"Life as I know it is complicated enough. The Insurance society has sent me to look for the legendary outlaw, Vash the Stampede. Where do I begin?? Where do I look for him? Does anyone think that doughnut head will listen to me?" A young lady thought. Meryll Stryfe, and her companion Millie Thompson headed to another city to search for the humanoid typhoon.

"This will take forever!!!" Meryll yelled angrily.

"Don't worry Meryll, we'll find him soon enough. He'll show up again." The tall sandy-haired lady said. Mille Thompson had a lot of heart, but not a lot of brains in this matter. From time to time, Meryll wondered if Millie really was as stupid as she looked. Sighing with frustration, she dragged Millie along and thought just how she got into this mess. She wanted a raise, but she didn't think it had to do with this!

"I'm thirsty." Millie said.

"How did the hell did I get stuck with you?" She muttered.

"Well," Millie started to explain, but Meryll shut her up with a glare of annoyance.

The sun was hot, and Meryll was tired of riding in the desert with a scatter-brained cow for a partner. Rest was desperately needed, and she promised the next town she came across to, she would find the nearest hotel.

A tall blond with sunglasses and a long red coat sighed wearily. He had been walking all day and night for two days straight. Getting away from his past, his demons... his fears. He needed to get away from the world, the very same world he fights to protect from his crazy twin brother, Knives. Lifting his hand to his brow, and gazing to the next town ahead, he calculated how far he could walk before he would collapse in exhaustion.

"Why me?" He pouted.

He trudged farther and farther until he reached his destination, barely making it to the city gates.

"Whew!! I made it!" He blurted out. He walked slowly, observing the city in its splendor. Spotting a young girl ahead he ran to her, the way he always does every time he saw a pretty girl.

"Hi there, young lady!" He smiled, knowing that he was going to get turned down regardless, but hell, it was worth a shot.

"And you might be?" The tall sixteen-year old said hurriedly.

"I can be your next body guard, and with this package you can get my heart guaranteed free!" He said energetically.

"I'm sorry, I don't speak to idiots." She said, walking away in a cold manner. Vash stood there, and sighed, squaring his shoulders in indifference.

"Oh well. Her loss." He said. He made his way to a bar, and for the next three hours he was carousing as any drunk would.

"Hurry up Millie!!" Meryll yelled in annoyance. Annoyed was all she ever was these days, and so far being annoyed got her nowhere.

"Coming!" Her partner yelled. They finally found a hotel, a nice one actually. They got the key to their room, and Meryll stopped in front of her room. She opened the door, and peered in. The room seemed extremely large, and Meryll had begun to wonder for the money they paid for a room, it was pretty cheap for a nice place like this.

"Thank God. Now I can just relax." She mumbled. She knew that the search for Vash would be difficult, but somehow she knew he was close by. She showered, and dressed. She thought for a moment, then grabbed Millie.

"Where are we going, Meryll?"

"Out."

***************************************

Vash walked out of the bar, his head already pounding from all the alcohol he could've possibly consumed tonight. He was seeing double, occasionally bumping into your average pole. He muttered under his breath and kept walking but was stopped in his tracks by an annoyingly bright light.

"Can you aim that thing somewhere ELSE??!" He slurred loudly.

"Like you would know how to keep your dumb ass out of the way." A young lady replied.

"I know that voice..." He thought. He looked closely, and saw two girls in the dark of night.

"OH! It's the insurance girls!! Well I can't talk much but-"

"Not so fast, Vash. We want to have a word with you."

"Look. I didn't do nuthin' ok? What the hell do you what from me?" He slurred unintelligently.

"Vash, we just want to talk to you, that's-"

"No! You and this whole world is after me. I'm innocent, and that's all you need to know, ok?" He said seriously, walking away slowly. Meryll walked to catch up to him, but Millie stopped her.

"Leave him alone. He isn't going anywhere." She said reassuringly.

"I hope your right, Millie. If your not, I will personally kill you for the months we spent to track him down."

************************************

Vash managed to get to his hotel room. He plopped on his bed lazily, and heaved a heavy sigh.

"Why can't they just leave me alone?" He said.

"Especially the short one. She really wants to see my ass kicked doesn't she?" He said jokingly.

"Now if I think about it for a moment, she is kinda cute when she gets angry." He admitted. She was getting prettier every time they met, and he was beginning to think that the universe wanted them to meet. How else was he always bumping into her?? His eyes drooped, and he fell into a deep slumber. Little did he know that for next few hours of his restless sleep, that would be the only thing he would think about.

*************************************

"I can't believe the nerve of that asshole!" She fumed. How dare he talk back to her? He didn't know her at all.

"That stupid idiot, always chasing young girls around and acting like a big bonehead!" She muttered.

"Maybe you're worried about him, Meryll."

"Why would I be worried about that dummy?" She said defensively. The last person she would ever want to talk to was Vash. Vash was an arrogant, self- centered... cutie

O_0?

"Where'd that come from?" She thought.

"I don't care about him, and that's that. Now go to bed or something... goodnight." She mumbled as Millie walked out of the door, and into her room. She had a hard time falling asleep, and images of Vash popped in and out of her head for the next few hours she would be awake.
